MSC Foundation, the private non-profit foundation established to lead, focus and advance MSC Group’s conservation and humanitarian commitments, launches #SuperCoralPlay, a campaign to raise awareness of the need to take action to protect and preserve coral reefs. The campaign is the result of a partnership between MSC Cruises, the Miami Super Bowl Host Committee (MSBHC), and 54 NFL players and influencers, such as Larry Fitzgerald, Jarvis Landry and Mark Sanchez.
Coral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems in the world and home to more than 25 percent of marine species. They serve as a food resource for half a billion people and protect coastal communities from storms and erosion. According to NOAA, some 84% of U.S. coral reefs are located within Florida alone where coral ecosystem-related spending has been estimated to generate $6 billion in economic impact in the five South Florida counties via annual sales, income, and employment, supporting over 71,000 full- and part-time jobs.
This special scientific project will see some of the the world’s leading experts in marine biology and coral conservation collaborating together, including the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (UM), Nova Southeastern University (NSU), the Perry Institute for Marine Science, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and The Centre Scientifique de Monaco (CSM), among other partners.
MSC Foundation has signed agreements with both UM and NSU for collaborative, educational and applied research partnerships for students and faculty of the Universities to engage in coordinated joint marine restoration research and applied research activities at and in the waters surrounding MSC Ocean Cay Marine Reserve. Graduate students from the Universities will live on the island for a semester as they participate in applied research as part of a fellowship.
