MSC Christening Ceremony between Europe and the World

MSC always loved to celebrate a new ship’s entry to fleet in different ports, from the Mediterranean to the north Europe and now with MSC Seaside, decided to expand its view arriving in the United States.

However there’s a person who has always been present during celebrations, Sophia Loren, the ultimate Godmother. The diva of Italian cinema had the honor and the burden to cut the ribbon of all the new built of the fleet, since Lirica in 2003, thanks to a long friendship that binds it to the owner Gianluigi Aponte.

Another characteristic of these events is the constant presence of prominent figures, both Italian and international. Among these many characters there are two who have given prestige to these festive evenings thanks to their huge international fame: Andrea Bocelli and Ennio Morricone. The Maestro, famous for being the author of Oscar-winning soundtracks, carries on his friendship with MSC since 2007, on the occasion of the MSC Orchestra christening in the port of Civitavecchia, then further sealed by his presence at MSC Preziosa christening, in Genoa in 2013. In the same year he entered the homes of cruise passengers with Conmigo, soundtrack of the film “One Night at Dinner” (Metti una sera a cena), rearranged by Morricone to be used for the spot MSC “not just any cruise”. Andrea Bocelli, however, enters the MSC world in 2008, when he enchants the theatre of MSC Poesia, moored in the port of Dover, with a concert in honor of the new ship. The tenor returns to celebrate an MSC ship in 2017, performing in Miami, on the occasion of MSC Seaside’s Naming Ceremony.

But the celebrities present in MSC christenings are many others. In 2008 in Dover we could find among the audience Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, part of the English royal house. In the same year, for MSC Fantasia christening in Naples, Pino Daniele, Renzo Arbore with his Italian Orchestra and Lucio Dalla performed in the stage. In 2009 in Barcelona the singer Amy Stewart, as Ambassador of UNICEF, as well as the master Josè Carreras and the dancer Eleonora Abbagnato participated in the celebrations in honor of Splendida. In 2012 in Marseille, Gerard Depardieu dedicated an ode to MSC Divina.

In the interactive map below you can Find out which are the ten ports that the Company has decided to honor with an important event such as a christening, from Italy to the United Kingdom, from Germany to Spain, passing through France and flying to United States.
